Have you ever wished your computer could understand what you want to do without the need to dig through menus or search results? Microsoft is working toward that goal.
In the latest Windows 11 preview build, a new feature called Ask Copilot is being tested. It appears directly on the taskbar and upgrades the traditional Windows search box.
Until now, searching from the taskbar simply looked for files, applications, and settings. Ask Copilot enhances this experience significantly.
The updated search box uses artificial intelligence to better understand what you are trying to accomplish. It can guide you to the correct location or carry out the task for you.
For instance, you could type commands such as “open the invoice template I used last month,” “connect to the projector,” or “how do I split this PDF?” Instead of returning a list of results, Copilot can take action by opening the file, adjusting the setting, or generating an answer.
It is the same search bar you are familiar with, but far more capable.
You will also see new icons next to the Ask Copilot field. These provide quick access to Copilot Vision, which analyzes on‑screen content, and to voice input, allowing you to speak rather than type.
If this sounds more AI‑driven than you prefer, there is no need to worry. The feature is completely optional. Ask Copilot only appears if you manually enable it in Settings under Personalization, then Taskbar, then Ask Copilot. If you choose not to activate it, the existing search experience remains unchanged.
Microsoft has emphasized that Ask Copilot does not gain any new access to your personal data. It relies on the same capabilities as standard Windows Search. It is not scanning your files or reading private content.
For business users, the primary benefits are time savings and improved focus. Instead of employees spending valuable minutes searching for documents, adjusting settings, or looking up instructions, Copilot can help them complete the task immediately. It offers a more streamlined and productive workflow where technology supports efficiency rather than slows it down.
Ask Copilot is currently in preview, but it is likely to reach general availability soon.
Will you enable Ask Copilot when it becomes available, or do you prefer to continue using the classic search experience? For now, the choice remains entirely in your hands.
